this small muscid hovered a lot and seemed very attached to a large log of fallen Poplar, a mature hollow tree with nests and rotted areas inside. It was intrigueing so I took a specimen. It was very noticeable as it hovered with its orange abdomen and almost blended in with the Palloptera also showing interest in the log. Is it a Hydrotaea perhaps and what can be learned from the specimen?

Hmm, interesting, seems to be
Fannia speciosa, an uncommon species. Maybe Nikita can have a look at this one..
