Can anyone suggest a family for this fly? On the ceiling. Townsville, Queensland. The thing on the antenna is just a bit of detritus.

Scatopsidae. Several genera have curved CuA2 and a supernumary crossvein between R4+5 and M: Scatopse (crossvein incomplete, not reaching R4+5), Holoplagia (complete), Colobostema (absent or incomplete), Cookella (complete), Ferneiella (incomplete). They should be separable by a combination of thorax length to width ratio and course of CuA2.

Thanks John, I'll dig it out and apply your advice.

John, under the microscope I can see a distinctive bend in CuA2, but no sign of a cross vein across to R5.
