Hello,
Malaise trap collected by Phil Withers in September in the "Maritime Alps".
I do not know if any of the bands on the eyes. I think the Glaucopis group.
Size 12 mm.
Presence of an appendix on vein R4.

Perhaps Tabanus obsolescens?

Obsolescens from France cannot be. This might be an aberrant exclusus, I talked earlier about. Need to check this when at home, I am currently at the Eight Dipterology Congress in Potsdam.

Yes Obsolescens is not known to France, but I can not find anything else.

It is exclusus.I know, it never keys out !
this variety puzzled me for years and once I was on the verge of describing as new. But... based on large series from Bulgaria, it is 'simply' exclusus.

and yes, the keys need to be revised.

I think this is also the case glaucopis where I find a great variety of size and color of the abdomen. It is therefore in the key, specify the combination of stable criteria as one goes along the advancement of knowledge.
Big thank you Theo

In the case of glaucopis, know that Portillo separated cognatus on authority of Schacht. I am still struggling with this, though.
