Can anyone suggest a species?
Netted. Townsville, Queensland.
The second picture is a lateral view of another individual.

Looks very bristly for a syrphid - I wonder whether this might be a tachinid - something like Saralba ocypteroides

Tachinidae. It looks superficially like some Northern Hemisphere Phasiinae, e.g. Cylindromyia.

Thanks Tony and John. Yep mistook a wing fold for a vena spura. Tachinidae looks good.

I don't think it is Phasiinae, but rather Blondeliini.

A golden yellow Trigonospila, if such a thing exists...

If you have access to
Paramonov, S. J., 1956: A review of the Australian species of Cylindromyia Meigen and Saralba Walker Tachinidae Diptera. Australian Journal of Zoology, 4: 358-375
you may get a species det.
But I'm nervous now, 'cos Theo has a habit of pointing out my errors! :S

Thanks Tony and Zeegers. No I don't have access to that paper but I note the reference to Cylindromyia.

I'll be amazed if it turns out to be anything other than Saralba, but then, being amazed most days is what's great about studying Diptera! :D
