A very early Phasia, I think :) Found feeding on Euphorbia helioscopia in area with mediterranean vegetation in C Spain. Date: 19.03.2014. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! :)

My guess would be P. pusilla - can you see the halteres or face on any other photos? :)

Thanks a lot for your reply, Chris!! :)

I am afraid these are the only photos of this specimen :( But I have much better pictures of another specimen feeding on the same flowers just a few minutes earlier. Only that the other one looks somehow different. The distance between the eyes looks a bit wider. Perhaps the female? No idea if both sexes can be told apart from external caracters in Phasia.

I am going to prepare pictures of the other specimen in a different thread as soon as I can ;)

But halteres are nearly impossible to photograph in Phasia :( They are always covered by those huge calypters :@ What should I look for in the face of the other specimen? That will help me to select the most useful views ;)

Possibly female - Phasia pusilla & barbifrons are not easy to sex. :)

Pusilla or another species from the pusilla-group (Hyalomyia): there are many more in Spain !

Impossible to tell from pictures (genitalia needed).

Chris, Theo, thanks for your replies :)

I see there isn't much point in struggling with pictures of this group. Phasia (Hyalomyia) sp. is good enough for me ;)
