I am confused. This Philipomyia was found near Sonega, Setúbal, SW Portugal on 27.082011. The antennae look closer to aprica than graeca to me but it was in lowlands (about 170 m altitud) in rural area. Could it be graeca? I have never heard of aprica at such low altitud. Any comment will be most welcome ;) Thanks in advance! :-)

Hello Piluca_Alvarez,

Philipomyia aprica has been caught even in the netherlands. Two males at Vlodrop, that can hardly be higher a.s.l. as your sighting. My first thought was Tabanus bovinus, but the green eyes? Has to be P. aprica...

Greetings,

Ectemnius

You are barking up the wrong tree: only Philipomyia rohdendorfi from the Caucasus has the antenna so dark.
It is Tabanus eggeri you are looking at, in my opinion.
You might check for setulae on the basicosta on the original pictures.

Or by chance any picture of the ventral side ?

Ectemnius, Theo, thanks a lot for your replies! :)

So, it was Tabanus... Had it wrong from the basis :S No wonder nothing seemed to fit :o

Theo, I am afraid no ventral shot :( But I am going to try to see those setulae on the basicosta. They might be there ;)

Thanks a lot again!! :)
