Hello Lesu, I pin all my flies laterally (quite a few UK dipterists that I know do the same). It is very quick when you want to keep lots of material, space efficient for larger species, and enables the genitalia on some groups to be hinged out. Using ethyl acetate a proportion die like this anyway, so they just have to be micropinned and left to dry with no further intervention needed. Looking at diptera overall, lots of the characters used in the keys are visible (though the squamal surface, suprasquamal ridge etc can be a frustration). Generally it is possible to avoid wrecking the lateral bristles though I have managed to make a mess of some Lonchaeidae.
