The problem is that once you collect the specimens is, the hairs tend to fall off, so if you know which species it is you usually don't know what it looks like when it is alive. If you collect them after you photograph them, this might change in the future...

I photograph moth flies and then collect them so I can identify them. Because the patterns are usually species-specific I will be able to identify living specimens of most species if I ever get to collect all the species (or, more realistically, if I collect with the help of colleagues around the world)...
