certainly an astonishing beast. a quick attempt to key through Engel drew a blank, no Spanish sp in that key fits description. will try Paramonov when find time but as always with unfamiliar species really need specimens of both sexes. Many details obscured even in this excellent shot.

If THIS is Triplasius pictus, I guess the one above is not, or vice versa...

well i have not found it myself nor do i have specimens so i am reliant on Neal for this one. this one is female, the one you cite is male which i presume accounts for the striking difference.

Paul, and we must bear in mind the one photographed by my friend is in pristine conditions. I have checked and it fits pretty well. And it is the only species of Triplasius that can be found in Spain. But thanks for the alert :) I have learnt something else out of all this |t

Please, compare the wing pattern and colour of the legs (which should not be influenced by the specimen being in pristine consition or not) and you will note the differences.
I found there is another Triplasius decribed from Spain (T. polius) but I have no access to the publication (www.maik.ru/abstr...stract.pdf).

Paul, I see your point ;) Didn't realize of those differences :S I only saw the markings on the scutellum and lowe part of the thorax. Very interesting article. If somebody has it or has a link to the whole thing, please, post it here.

Jorge just confirmed polius and sent me a pdf of the paper that also confirms an ID by Neal Evenhuis.
A definite 'must' for the Gallery!
