I think this is a Pangonius sp. tabanid, which I gather is a difficult genus, but I have lots of photos of this fly if different views are needed.
Hope Theo is out there... Any chance of identifying to species from photos alone?

entirely polished black face plus bicoloured legs suggests

Another fly bites the dust on Lesbos as this big tabanid proves no match for a little spider...
I failed to catch any of these flies, but the spiders were having no probs..

Did you collect the specimen ? It is indeed in the vicinity of pyritosus. However, there is a second species in Turkey, found once in Greece (unpublished). Given the locality Lesbos, it would be very interesting to see the specimen.

Many thanks for your help with this. Sorry, no specimens... I very rarely collect unless I know the need and have a chance to return to a location.. and I'm back in the UK now. These flies were quite common on Lesbos, though and I saw them at several locations near the north and east coasts, and I may get the chance to go back next year... I do have several more shots of them, so if there are any specific angles or close up details that would help confirm the ID, I could make crops of them and post them.
