Hi all,
This small sarcophagidea looks a lot ( to me) like Sphenometopa fastuosa in the gallery. But is it ?

Laudun, Vaucluse, France. June 18th 2010.

Your guess is correct on genus level. It is indeed Sphenometopa spec (Sarcophagidae, Miltogramminae)

But this is a large genus with difficult species. I would need at least a dorsal view to get closer on species level.

Thanks a lot.
Unfortunately, I don't have a decent dorsal picture. Just this one. You can barely see the color pattern, but no detail whatsoever.

It might be Sphenometopa fastuosa, but with the last picture I cannot rule out some other species.

Four species of Sphenometopa are known from France: eluta, fastuosa, stelviana, variegata. Only fastuosa is a good match for the photos presented here. Some other species of this large genus are very similar to fastuosa, but they have so far only been recorded outside Europe.
