Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Group sex?

Group sex or a circus number?... The two top flies are probably Empis oppaca, but I'm not sure what the third one is or what it is doing. A predator of another species or a second male trying to copulate? Sorry for the poor quality but this is an action shot...

It is usual to testify in Empidids that males offer a prey to the female.

The third one appears to be a syrphid, but there are plenty records of another empid in the claws of a mating female. On occasion there even have been smaller specimens of the same species that befell the fate of being the nuptial gift...
