Dear Stephen,

I'd say you were almost correct: it's certainly a Sympycnus and most likely S. desoutteri, but as you might know, there are most probably two morphological forms present in the UK and there is currently still some confusion about the validity of S. pulicarius and S. annulipes.

Very nice pictures, by the way. I had no idea that a common species like this was so nice.
