Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Dolichopodidae: Sympycnus cf. desoutteri

I have been trying out my new copy of d'Assis Fonseca. This one (from July, Clitheroe, 5mm) came out as a male of
Sympycnus desoutteri (from these 4 photos, no specimen). Is this likely to be right?

Dear Stephen,
I'd say you were almost correct: it's certainly a Sympycnus and most likely S. desoutteri, but as you might know, there are most probably two morphological forms present in the UK and there is currently still some confusion about the validity of S. pulicarius and S. annulipes.
Very nice pictures, by the way. I had no idea that a common species like this was so nice.

S. cf desoutteri then (I didn't realise I had left off the 'de' - now corrected). They do look better alive, don't they, even if the photo is a little grainy.
