This morning I found this 1cm large orange fly in my garden (Brussels-Belgium). It has a design on the wings like a Tephritidae. Is it?

A very nice find! It is not Tephritidae but Piophilidae (subfamily Neottiophilinae): Neottiophila praeustum. Larvae are ectoparasitic bloodsuckers on the nestlings of passerine birds (the last part quoted from the Manual of Nearctic Diptera).

Can I include it in the Diptera Gallery?

No it is not a member of the family Tephritidae but a member of the family Piophilidae. Neottiophilum praeustum. The larvae live as parasites on young birds. The larvae suck blood of the nestlings.

I see that Paul was again to quick for me!
In the Netherlands the species is said to be rather scarce, but to my opinion it is not uncommon.

Together with the first birds leaving their nest in my garden (Brussels - Belgium), I had one again on 02 may 2008.

I don't find my first picture in the Diptera Gallery anymore. Has something changed in the classification? I didn't found this thread on google neather, but that must be because it should be ?Neottiophilum praestrum? (according to fauna europaea) ?
thanks,
bart
