Hello,

I photographed this fly in Campo Imperatore (AQ), Italy, 1500m a.s.l. on June 2nd 2023. I think it is a member of the genus Bibio, but is it possible to identify its species from these photos?

it looks like Bibio varipes ….

did you ever see Dilophus ?

it is pretty common and it is a cryptic species, to be described soon. If you’d happen to have pictures of these, that would be great.

Thank you! What are the characteristics of this cryptic species? I checked in my archive and noticed that I have several photos of Dilophus. Some in particular were taken in June in the same area as this Bibio, unfortunately they are not very good as all the photographed individuals were stuck in a spider's web.
Other photos of Dilophus I took near L'Aquila in the last three years include an early spring species (identified here in the forum as D. humeralis/antipedalis) and an autumn species with black males and orange/yellowish females.
