Forum - Code of Conduct |
 |
Please read the following carefully
General etiquette
Though there never have been problems, just remember to observe the generally accepted etiquettes for internet forums while posting in this forum. So, no spamming, no flaming, no cursing, no undue quoting, etc. You get the drift.
Queries for identification
When posting a query for identification, if possible, please add as much information as possible that can assist in identification. Important information is (or can be):
* locality (make certain that the locality cannot be interpreted wrongly, so avoid abbreviations [Europeans are not often up to speed with the different state abbreviations in the U.S.A. and likewise American users may not uderstand all abbreviations of european countries]);
* date (please write the name of the month in full because conventions of date formats using numbers only can vary throughout the world and can thus be confusing);
* size (preferably in mm);
* habitat (at least something general like 'coniferous forest', 'beach', or 'pasture', but things like 'on a dead branch of an isolated oak tree in the fields just outside of the city' are more helpfull);
* substrate (if not clear from picture or habitat description).
Adding images
When posting a query for identification and adding an image, please note the following:
* It should be avoided to place images that are too broad. Not every user will have a wide screen monitor and broad images can result in having to scroll from left to right to read the texts. The recommended maximum width is 600 pixels.
* If you use [ img ] tags to include images in your post, rememember that the link will be broken as soon as:
- the image is deleted from the remote server;
- the image on the remote server is renamed;
- the remote server is down.
- As a result of the growing popularity of the site it is not feasable anymore to make local backups of all images placed in the forum and the webmaster cannot always repair broken links anymore. The original poster will have to do that him/herself and needs to keep in track of images (s)he placed in the forum him/herself.
* Please, put images in the message itself rather than only providing links to (internet pages with) the images. For practical reasons it is better to have the actual images in the thread discussing a certain species or subject rather than having them in separate windows.
* Please try to keep the number of species per thread restricted to one or a group of related species at most. It confuses the reader if two or more elaborate discussions on different subjects start in the same thread. Also it will lead to the loss of overview when there are too many different kinds of images and all need identification.
* Instructions for adding images to posts in the Frequently Asked Questions must be followed.
Third party images
* If an image is not taken by yourself you must give the name of the person who actually did take the picture, unless he/she has given specific instructions to remain anonymous.
* If an image is not taken by yourself but linked to, for example, in an online photoalbum or other website, you must give a link to the relevant page in visible text (preferable between [ url ] tags), too.
* If in this way you can make an identification on another website, please remember to give due credit to the Diptera.info website while mentioning the user's (nick)name. This is just simple courtesy and gives credit to the Diptera.info community as a whole.
Conclusion
If at any time, administrators of this site find breaches of this Code, the member in question will be addressed. In case that a member does not follow this Code and is unwilling to edit his posts or adjust his/her future behaviour accordingly, the administrators may take appropriate actions. This can range from editing or removal of posts by administrators to outright banning of offending members. At all times Diptera.info reserves the right to edit posts in case of faulty/broken links or anything else that hampers other members to use the forum properly. |
