Hi. I took these photos of some Kelp Flies at Hobuck Beach in Neah Bay, Clallam Co., Washington on November 4th. This is in the extreme northwest corner of the Continental United States. One photo shows what looks like a mite(?) attached to the kelp Fly. What is that? They aren't the best photos because the flies move super fast and my available camera equipment wasn't exactly up to the task. Are all of these flies Coelopa sp., perhaps C. vanduzeei? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
