About 5.5 mm long. Collected July 30, 2016 on plant infested with oleander aphids. Adult reared from similar puparium (collected at same time and place) was ID'd as O. fuscipennis by Bill Dean on Bugguide (http://bugguide.n...ew/1267407), but unfortunately I didn't photograph the immature stages of that individual.

I'm not familiar with nearctic fauna but this pupa is very similar as our European Episyrphus balteatus. Do you have this in Texas?

Thanks for the comment, Atylotus. A quick online search turned up no evidence that Episyrphus balteatus occurs in North America. Its puparium does look very similar to this, though.

I was finally able to photograph the larva, puparium and adult of a single individual, which turned out to be Ocyptamus fuscipennis. Here are the images:

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
