During the last wekk I have found many Chironomidae on the kitchen window. I think they have come from flower pots that have been standing on the window bench. Is it possible to identify it?

Orthocladiinae. Is there a hair at the tip of the antenna, parallel to the antenna and a bit wider than the diameter of the antenna? I don't see one but it might be out of focus. Also, can you tell if the eyes are hairy?

There is a hair at the tip of the antenna, but it is very difficult to photograph. The eyes are bare.

I think this is Smittia contingens, but I'd like a second opinion. The genus Smittia is mostly terrestrial.

Thanks so much John! A Swedish expert confirmed that it was Smittia contingens.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
