I found this fly on 17-06-2015, near Faliraki. I am clueless even with the genus, but found a bad picture of a rather worn specimen of Caecanthrax arabicus here:
http://www.researchgate.net/publication/275340625_The_bee_flies_(Diptera_Bombyliidae)_of_Jordan

showing a wing pattern very similar to the one I photographed.

Could this sp. have anything to do with the one in the picture? (All my pics are from this angle, unfortunately.)
Thanks for any help!
Greetings,
Henrik.

Enlargement of the head, perhaps it helps...

Henrik, it could be. The looks (including venation and abdominal pattern) seem to match my references and the species is present in Rhodes. But I need to go through the description in detail and also check if something similar might be found there too.

You will know from me again about this issue Wink

Dear Piluca, do you still have some doubts about the ID of this fly? I looked through the available check lists of nearby countries, but found nothing really similar to Caecanthrax arabicus Smile
Greetings, and a Happy New Year!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
