12mm sunning on Bramble leaf 7.9.15, Wiltshire, UK. I'd be grateful for confirmation of my tentative ID based largley on the red-banded legs and reddish abdomen.

Hello
Dichetophora is certainly correct, to ID obliterata one should see clearly two small brisles on the posterior calli (I think I can see them on your pictures but it is not clear!).

So if you put a higher resolution image, one can tell for sure.

Bye

Many thanks Jonas; I think the 2 bristles you mention are present on the postalar calli visible in this crop.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
