Near a fast-flowing river in Upstate New York, USA (42.54 N, 76.60 W) July 7, 2015. I think this is Tabanus fairchildi: 3 rows of pale spots on abdomen, bicolored fore legs, wing without spots, nearly complete dark eye band, black antenna.

Diificult to say. It certainly looks like fairchildi, but the lateral spots seem to be too small ? Difficult to be sure on these pics. If you collected it, check these spots/marks and check subcallus for hairs ! Habitat fits nicely. Theo |

I could not collect there. I also noticed the small spots. The hairs on the frons are pale, when the frons should be "grayish to brown pruinose with black hairs" according to Teskey (1990). And my fly has three small, black spots pretending to be ocelli. Compare the photo on BugGuide identified by John Burger, http://bugguide.n...59/bgimage. But I don't see any other options. Teskey says the subcallus can be bare. |
