Picture is not mine. The fly was found by my friend José Fernández in Toledo, C Spain by a sault lagoon on 22.II.2015. A very early Tachinid. Petiole reminds me the one of Hypovoria hilaris (which starts flying much later), but various things don't seem to fit (above all, the genal hairs of this fly). What else can it be?? Not many Tachinids can be on its wings so soon in the season. Any ideas? Whatever help will be most appreciated Wink

Hi Piluca

I agree it should be Voriini and as far as I can tell (based on description), it agrees very well with Uclesia fumipennis. By the way, this genus is named after a place called 'Ucles" somewhere in Spain ! Most if not all Uclesia are extremely early spring species, so that makes sense as well.
Interesting to read that Mesnil compairs the abdominal pattern with that of Phorocera. If you forget about the head and the wings, that makes sense !

Thanks so much once more, Theo!! Smile

Surprisingly, you already mentioned Uclesia fumipennis last year, when I uploaded my Hypovoria hilaris, but I had completely forgotten about it Wink

It seems that odd petiole always should lead us in this direction Wink

By the way, Uclés is in province of Cuenca, also in Castilla-La Mancha, C Spain, as Toledo province is Smile Smile It seems it is the right area too!! Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
