Unfortunately my contact could only manage one quick shot at this fly in his garden in Durban in South Africa. Wing venation and a lot of other diagnostic data lacking. But a striking insect. The abdomen and bristles don't look like most Syrphidae to me, but... In short, any suggestions, even at the family level? Thanks for attention...
