Hello pengie,

Yes, definately E. strigatus.
Although there might be similar species elsewhere in Europe. Where did you collect the specimen?

Greetings,

Ectemnius

Thank you very much!

We found them predominantly along treelines and hedgerows in SW Germany (State: Rheinland-Pfalz) They where mostly associated with E. sogdianus (genital not hooked and no projection on femur 3).

Another question:

Is it possible that there is another similar species with dark brownisch antennasegment 3 or could this be because of the ethanol.

In Van Ween they ask for: Antennae orange to reddish.
Will I recognize, when i get one of these?

Hello pengie,

The habitat sounds typical of E. strigatus. However, there are very few recent recordings of E. sogdianus in the netherlands and Belgium. The two sightings where I know of are from the coast where no E. strigatus were found. Could you upload a photo of the specimens femur (E. funeralis is far more common and can be hard to recognize and also has no hook on the stylus)

The species with the red antennae which could be expcted are E. ornatus and E. pulchellus. Those species occur in old forests on small sunlit areas.

Greetings,

Ectemnius

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
