Hello,

my first flies this year in the nightly garden (northwest Germany) were Dryomyza flaveola, Phaonia tuguriorum, some Drosophila, Chironomidae and Trichoceridae. And this 4.5 mm Heleomyzid. Can it be determined?

Isn't this Muscidae: Lispocephala brachialis?

Jan

Hi,
It's face is indeed quite yellow - also more yellow than the one I've found so far. Maybe you could try to attract the attention of a Muscidae expert to check these pictures? I'm unfortunately just another hobby entomologist and can't adbvise any better. Google found few other rather yellow faced Lispocephalas but I can't tell how trustwothy these sources are.
Quite some of the L. brachialis shown in the gallery here are at least november and february -> january seem plausible for this species.
On the other hand there are very few setae visible on tibia3. I guess L. brachialis should have some more. In Heleomyzidae some of the Tephrochlamys species shown here in the gallery resemble you specimen very well. Compare also recent post http://diptera.in...d_id=66112

Regards
Jan

yes, I typically find Lispocephala in the colder season, like this one: http://www.dipter...d_id=65804But apart from the yellow frons I have never seen one with such an orange abdomen.

Yes. But I always have problems distiguishing Tephrochlamys from Heteromyza. Most of the bluish/orange Heleomyzids I already posted this year were Heteromyza sp.. They are also typically occuring in the colder season.

This was my similar find: www.naturalis-historia.de/bilder/DSC_7526.JPG
ID is not confirmed...
The more I learn about insects the less reason for confidence in their ID seems to be left.

Juergen's fly is an Heleomyzidae : Muscidae have at least a few strong and long bristles on legs (femora or tibiae) and the suture is more pronounced (an calypters are fully developped).
Stephane.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
