Hello,

Can anyone please help me identify the Diptera in the attached image? I desperately need to identify it for my thesis but am having no luck. It was observed on a carcass.

Many thanks,
Daniella

OK. Unless you have a better picture, I can only guessing (the picture is too blurred to see whether it has presutural acrostichals, and legs are not visible) : my guess is Phaonia subventa (female), but as I said, nothing sure here.
Stephane.

Hi Stephane,

Thank you very much, thats much appreciated! Unfortunately I was photographing it through a mesh cage so the only other picture I have is the zoomed out version. While this may be less blurry, there is a carcass in it which I didn't want to subject people to!

Again, thanks for the help, much appreciated!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
