Great photos Graeme - it certainly looks like a tachinid but if it has a subscutellum then it would clinch it I don't know the Australian fauna well enough to comment on what it might be though

Thanks Chris. The subscutellum is not very prominent, although the scutellum is well raised up. However the barcode locates it among other tachinids. I've just taken up stacking pictures, hence the improvement in the quality. |
