Hi philporter,

Ormyrus sp seems very likely to me, but I have no clue about the species. The whole family of Ormyridae is perhaps entirely parasitic in galls of cynipids, as far as I know the genus Ormyrus in oak-galls.

Best regards,

Marc

Probably Ormyrus nitidulus (= Ormyrus tubulosus). They are really quite common around here on oak trees with knopper galls. There are some photos of this species half way down this page at Alain Ramel's Les Insectes site: http://aramel.fre...r-32.shtml
Ormyrus pomaceus is also associated with oak galls but not with knopper galls.
There is a key to to the UK Ormyridae in Oak Galls in Britain by Robin Williams (a PDF seems to be available at the NHM web site but I am saving up to buy a hard copy).

Many thanks for this information Tristram. I will see if Robin is willing to have a look at the specimen, but your diagnosis seems entirely likely.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
