Volucella zonaria female. May I ask you if there were many Vespa crabro nests nearby? I usually find these females near hornets. Yesterday, for example, I captured one just beneath a small nest.

thanks a lot for your id.
I didn't see any hornest nests around, but next time I see a female Volucella zonaria, I'll keep an eye out for Vespa's.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
