This could be Botanophila fugax.....but again to be sure I have to see the genitals !

I just give you some advice to prepare the genitals:

Cut the abdomen in half and put it in a mixture of one spoon hot water and some drops of detergent to soften the genitals.
Wait for several hours and put the abdomen in vinigar for a minute.
With a fine pair of tweezers you can seperate the 5th sternite and surstylus apart (don’t botter about the appendage that could stick on to the genitals, they can be removed later on in KOH)

Then try to make photos of them.

If you don’t have KOH you can use the white grain in drain cleaner (two or three grains are enough) and take a very small glass that can be heat up, put a teaspoon water + the grains + the genitals into it and boil it all for about a minute or less. (don't inhale!)

Take out the genitals and wash them in some water or alcohol and than put the genitals in a very small glass object filled with a bottom of glycerine……than you are ready for take of.Smile

I have intended to shoot fly genitalia for some time now,
but I wasn't sure of the details involved in it. I will try this, and hope for success. Thank you.

Regards, Pentti.

Don't forget......just do it slow and no hurry!
Maybe also useful is the way of pinning.....so I give you an example:

1 Stick a needle into the side and place the fly on to some soft foam

2 Place the second needle just above the end of the abdomen

3 Than wrench with another needle the surstylus upwards and place the needle just directly below the surstylus, so that the surstylus can’t turn down again.

Wait for several hours so the fly can dry and than you can remove the second and thirth needle.

Dear Johanna, thanks for such instructions. Do you have any suggestion about how to extract females' genitalia?

cheers, Paolo

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
