Hi,

Flesh fly photographed in August 2013 near Vancouver, BC, Canada. I've provided a couple of different views.

Cheers,
EC

It is actually a Muscidae.

So change the title and wait for the Muscid-experts to show up.

Hi,

I'm no expert of cause, but here in Europe this would be genus Muscina I think.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Dang! How can you tell I'm not a Dipterologist? Smile I thought the dorsal markings on the thorax indicated that it was a flesh fly, but now that I look at it they really aren't stripes.

I'll change the title.

If anyone could give quick ponters on how you can tell this is a Muscid I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers,
EC

The bend in the median vein is by far to blunt to consider Sarcophagidae.

By the way, Muscina is an excellent suggestion (tip of scutellum red)

Thanks very much (and to Juergen too)! The eyes seem quite far apart. Does that indicate it is a female?

Hi!

But it's typical for many Muscina species.

The eyes seem quite far apart. Does that indicate it is a female?

Yes.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
