Found sitting on a rock by ponds near atlantic forest in Gijón, Asturias, coastal N Spain, on 24.08.2013. Reminds me of Tabanus autumnnalis and an odd Atylotus at the same time Sad Help, please!!

WEll, I couldn't tell you why it couldn't be T. bromius.

So not really a positive ID, but tentative.

Thanks a lot for the tentative ID, Theo Wink It is appreciated all the same Wink

These Tabanus are going to drive me mad Sad I have been doing a bit of study and I usually see the band right in the middle of the eye. No idea if this works always this way. I guess it depends on how the light gets on the eye.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
