Female Tipula, perhaps truncorum/crassicornis or closely related.
Atracted by UV-light, but caught by a spiders web on my house, close to a mixed wood, clearing and a small stream, Ulricehamn, Sweden, June 16th. Altitude 300 m.

Wing 15 mm. Yellowish bands on several tergites, the first(?) one ver black. Bands on thorax (with a thin central stripe) not typical for truncorum, I beleive. Antennas quite short(?) with a little yellow on the second segment. Third segment looks guite long.

My own experiance is limitid (I have seen a couple of truncorum at the same place, crassicornis is probably extremely rare in Sweden) and material on the web for comparisation limited. Another species? Try to post 6 photos. Any help would be appreciated!

Recently Pjotr Oosterbroek (ccw.naturalis.nl)told me that this is Tipula laetibasis.

"It is Tipula (Pterelachisus) laetibasis. A rare species so far known from Czech Rep., Finland, Norway (north), Sweden (north); Russia: NET (north), CET (Moskovskaya oblast); Russia: WS (Altay), ES, FE (incl. Sakhalin, Kuril Is); Japan (Honshu).
Your locality is in South Sweden, so quite an extension."

As far as I know there is only one previous record, described as Tipula caerulea, from Sweden (Lappland) , more than 60 years ago!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
