found on 2013-07-28 in a forest near Marburg, central Germany. Is it R. scolopaceus or strigosus?
Regards, Ingo

Hello Ingo,

I think, end of July is too late for scolopaceus. And it also looks more like the strigosus, which are numerous here at garden trees in mid summer. But better wait for the experts.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Well, I think so too. However in 2013 we had a special cold spring time...

No, no, and no :-) Look at the crosswein touching pterostigma. This is not present in R. strigosus. And, female strigosus has unicolor bright brown thorax. Result: female R. scolopaceus, no doubts!

I forgot to write about the time of occurrence. In SW Czech Republic, Rhagio occurs ca. from the end of May to the end of June, while my few Rh. strigosus were caught in mid of July. But, this year I have one scolopaceus male 16th July. At the first moment, I thought it is strigosus too. So, nature is nature :-)

Thanks for this information. The weather in 2013 was really extreme (cold and wet spring, very hot summer) and many species were seen here later as in normal years. Okay, in future I will have a look to the crosswein... Greetings, Ingo

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
