Hi,
Does anybody know what this is?
I often see these on top of straw bales in the morning.
I take the photo on 25 November 2013 Kokkola, Finland.

Pentti.

Not Scatellla - the costa stops at R4+5, which makes it Scatophila.
Interesting that it should be active in such cold weather!Smile

Thanks for the replies.
The first shot is of a live specimen on top the wheat bales. I then captured the fly, brought it home and took some more shots after needling it.

Regards, Pentti.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
