Could someone identify which species is this fly? The picture is taken 16th of May 2013 in Serbia.

Hi! It is a Hybomitra sp., difficult to say which species from the single image, but my guess is H. bimaculata var. bisignata

My money would be on H. pilosa, which is an Balkan endemic. NIce !
(the hairs on the eyes are very long and white and if you look through the wings, the light patches on tergite 2 are silvery grey, not red.). Moreover, it is too ' hairy' for bimaculata.
