Photos taken in Reading, UK, on 2013-09-18.

I thought it might be a Sturmia bella but then noticed it has hairy eyes.

Interesting - obviously not Sturmia but not sure what it is - did you take a specimen?

No specimen but I will see if I can get one this weekend (the weather forecast for this area looks quite promising).

Lydella has bare eyes as well !

It looks 'Sturmiini' indeed and there is one 1 reclincate orbital seta, a big clue.

But I cannot give a definitive opinion yet

Is it a female Eumea linearicornis?
(A drop of moisture is hiding the centre line on the thorax?)

I can see only 4 black vittae on the thorax (which disagrees with Eumea)
But it is difficult to see !

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
