Hi Forum,

Photographed in Lower Austria, Austria, @ 15. July 2012.

Which one is it?

insects.at/images/originals/Diptera/Stratiomyidae/Odontomyia_angulata_A_0712C.jpg

It should be obvious, i think - but i can't find it.

Cheers

No Syrphid, it is Stratiomyidae - Odontomyia angulata (http://www.dipter...to_id=8199) Smile.

Odontomyia: quite well possible.
angulata: I am not quite sure whether they have it in Australia...

Well, I have no Stratiomyidae key, but from many pictures (e. g. http://intruiging...a-viridula) I learnt that Oplodonta viridula has dotted eyes, and also the colouration of the frons looks different.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
