Does anyone have any thoughts on the identity of this pair of beardy beauties? Photographed in late November 2012 in Bowning Cemetery (near Canberra), each fly c25mm long. I think they are Asilinae, but have no clue further than that.

Susan,

These 'beardy beauties' are Dolopus rubrithorax; male with massive genitalia. Great photo!

Regards, Eric

Eric -- thank you! It is great to know their name. I'm glad you like the photo -- I'll submit it to the gallery.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
