Trichoceridiae have

* short, usually very short, A2 (half wing length in Tipulidae s.l.)
* ocelli (absent in Tipulidae)
* long antennae (usually shorter in Tipulidae)
* somewhat different wing veins other than A2, but probably with overlap between families

Most Trichoceridae fly in cold weather, while other crane flies are mostly gone after first frost.

This is indeed Trichoceridae, Trichocera (Metatrichocera) forcipula Nielsen, 1920. It was known from Slovakia from the publication of J.Starý: Starý, J. 1997. Trichoceridae. In Chvala, M. (Ed.): Check list of Diptera (Insecta) of the Czech and Slovak Republics. Karolinum - Charles University Press, Prague p. 11.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
