I was astonished when I saw this picture taken by my friend Francisco Rodriguez. It looks like Ibisia vaillanti to me. As far as I know there are only two species of Ibisia cited in Spain: marginata and vaillanti. Females are not separable by pictures but males of I. vaillanti are supposed to have much darker wings overall than marginata, specially in the basal and apical areas.

Have a look at this article:

http://www.limnol...49a2a202a6

the drawing of the wing of I. vaillanti looks exactly like the male specimen my friend photographed, and certainly is much darker in the main areas than any of the pictures of marginata males I have seen.

I would like some opinion as I have no experience with these, only theory Wink It might not even be Ibisia, but I think it is.

The picture was taken by a river in Ragol, Almeria, SE Spain on the 4th June 2012.

It is possible, but the intensity of the markings in available images of Ibisia seems to be quite variable so I would not put too much trust on these. The markings on the abdomen, though, are different from what I have seen on most specimens identified as marginata so it probably is another species. However, see my remark HERE.

Thanks a lot for your reply, Paul Smile I would have been very happy with a confirmation but just an opinion from someone makes me have a more real perspective on these Wink which is good enough TumbsUp

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
