Hi, Recently I watched a copula of small yellow crane flies on a wet way in a south Brandenburgian forest. Are they Limoniidae? They do not show very distinctive features, I am afraid. Is an ID possible? Many thanks, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: ![]() [191.56Kb] |

Hello. Wing veins, for me, seem more like Tipulidae type (I'm excluding totally Trichoceridae because of A2 that here seems straight). If I'm wrong I apologize |

No apologies necessary, IDs from photos are always a risk, especially if the animal is not very special. Thanks for the hint; however, I thought Tipulids were bigger... |

Here is another yellow one from Berlin (thus a bit different locality, but same time of flying) - may be, it is the same species?

Identification with Geiger, 1986b (PDF available from CCW) goes to Dicranomyia (Dicr.) autumnalis, but with the description of the species Geiger mentions that the colouration resembles several Dicranomyia's and that details of the hypopygium are needed to come to the species. Kind regards, Pjotr Oosterbroek |

Many thanks, Nikita and Pjotr - you supplied more information than I expected! A safe genus name is great, and cf. autumnalis may be added with the reservation that the hypopygium might lead to another similar species. |
