This one was found sitting on a leaf in decidous forest by a river in the outskirts of Madrid on the 30th October 2011. I think it might be a Phaonia. Perhaps Phaonia rufiventris? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Stephane, I'm interested how you can exclude Phaonia subventa?

Well, if I'm not mistaken with the pictures, there is only one pair of presutural acrostichal. Ph. subventa (and bitincta) should have 2-3 pairs.
Of course, we were more confident if we could see the fore and mid tibia chaetotaxy.

Thanks! Usually I check the chaetotaxy of the fore and mid tibia to distinguish the species, I didn't know the character of the presutural acrostichals.

Very interesting the presutural acrostichal bristles clue. I didn't know about it either.

Here is another picture with more detail of the torax for you two to see it more clearly. And sorry, no chance for the mid tibia chaetotaxy. It flew off before I could get anything better :-(

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
