Could someone help me identifying these Tephritid? I think it can be Chaetostomella cylindrica. The photo (author: José Biedma) was made near Jaén, Spain, on 8.8.2010. Thanks Jordi Clavell attached the following image: [105.51Kb] Edited by Jordi Clavell on 20-12-2011 19:55 |

I am not an expert, but I recently posted a similar fly and was told it was Tomoplagia sp. Like yours it seemed to be laying eggs in an unopened flower bud: http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=43771 __________________ http://www.lesfruitsdemer.org |

Thank you, marcaumarc, but this fly isn't a Tomoplagia, and I doubt between Chaetostomella cylindrica or a Chaetorellia sp. Tomoplagia is a beautiful genus that I has never seen! :-) |

It is a Chaetostomella alright and most probably C. cylindrica. Its not a Chaetorellia for the lack of the dorsocentral bristles before the suture. Nor is it a Tomoplagia, thats an endemic genus to the Neotropics. John |

Thank you very much, John. The only species cited in peninsular Spain is Ch. cylindrica, it's surely the most probably ID. |

It looks to be something special of Chaetostomella: abdominal setae look to be whitish!
