Sounds good according to the Conops key (http://home.hccne...html#item5) except that the hill containing the ocelli has not exaxctly the same colour as the eyes. The other alternatives, however, are still much less matching. I am by far no Conopidae expert but I find the Van Veen key easy to handle . |

This certainly appears to be a male Conops vitellinus. The key features in the male are the extent and shape of yellow markings on the tergites, and the ratio of proboscis length to head height, which should be <1.2 for vitellinus (this specimen is 1.1 as measured from the image). >1.3 would suggest quadrifasciatus, which is very similar. My 1997 paper in Dipterists Digest (3: 49-53) refers - I can send a PDF if wanted. Regards D. |
