Yes the pattern certainly looks like P. germanica Nick, plus I think it has 3 radial rib veins.

Next year I might be lucky to see the courtship! They are breeding and increasing numbers I'm sure, hopefully this hard winter won't have set them back. Keeping an organic garden is half the battle I think.

OK thanks Janet, and happy bug hunting when warmth finally returns. Yes, i hope the cold winter hasn't exterminated too much insect life... but the last 2 winters were pretty tough too on our Wiltshire hilltop, and things seemed to bounce back OK, if a little late. My garden is chemical free too, and has a very high insect diversity. We have some big trees, lots of flowering plants, some wild sections with lots of ground cover, and we are surrounded by pastureland and woodland, which all helps. I find lots of Panorpa here and also in hedgerows in pastureland in the area generally.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
