This flies body was 12 mm. Could genus and perhaps species be told from this picture?

Thanks for your help in advance

Yep Limoniidae, palps look just too smal for tipulid. Can't imagine it's cylindrotomidae.

I love all these Limoniidae you are getting Kurt! It's giving me practice at keying them.. Grin

I get Limonia stigma

From the keys:

Yellow or yellow-brown species thorax not extra-glossy. Wings with at most 2 or 3 small dark spots by the front margin but no other markings. Abdomen yellowish. ->

Top of thorax with a partial narrow median stripe. (can be absent). ->

Head yellowish. Femora with only a short dark apical ring. Front of wings with at most two dark spots often tiny and inconspicuous. (the other option with 3 spots has a grey head and sub apical femora ring (or ring long extending to apex) > L. phragmitidis)

That's if I haven't missed something else!

Janet

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
