Hello!

Another 8 mm Phaonia from a tree last week (northwest Germany). I guess, this time it is P. rufiventris (?).

I'm temporary out of work, so a little more time to spend Grin
It is always difficult with Phaonia subventa / rufiventris / bitincta, so i have tried for you to make it visible.
Phaonia subventa:
short plumose arista, midtibia with 2 posterior setae, meron with some pale hairs below spiracle.
Phaonia rufiventris:
Longer plumose arista, midtibia with 3-4 posterior setae, katepimeron with some pale hairs, parts of pleura yellow.
Phaonia bitincta:
Longer plumose arista, midtibia with 3 posterior setae, meron with some pale hairs below spiracle.

Make your one conclusion..Grin

Joke, may I jump in to thank you on behalf of all us beginners. This guide will be a great resource. Any chance of repeating these images in an Overview thread that will be easier to find in future? You might even be tempted to add some more of these difficult species Smile

Stephen.

Yes sorry about that Joke...Grin, I'm a heartless B******, I know
Great help for us poor souls trying in vain to come to terms with the terminology (mainly me), wish there were more explanations laid out like this like this on the site.

Well done Joke

Less heartless than ever....Roger

Hi, Joke!

I also appreciate your drawings very much (also thanks for your Anthomyiidae explanations in the other thread)! But I'm afraid, most of the characters I won't be able to see on a live individual (as I don't catch and rear them). Most conspicuous for me on M. rufiventris is the partly yellow pleura and the mostly pure yellow/orange scutellum. In the most cases, I'm afraid I still must rely on expirience and general "jizz" (I find, P. subventa has a clearly different "orange" from P. rufiventris and a clearly different general habit as B. bitincta).
Best regards!
